A Social Therapy Dog is an Assistance Dog specially trained to perform at the intermediate (or higher) obedience level and is used to visit residents of nursing homes, hospitals and/or hospice facilities. Their sole mission is to bring a sense of “joy” and “happiness” to those they meet during such visitations.
At the completion of their training requirements, Social Therapy Dogs must pass evaluation and certification tests given by their trainer(s). Once the Social Therapy Dog has successfully completed these tests, it is then designated as a “Certified” Social Therapy Dog.
It is important to note that Social Therapy Dogs have limited “Public Access” as defined by the ADA. The Public Access is limited to facilities in which the dog can reasonably be expected to perform its duties, i.e. nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, etc.
PAWS Training Center can train your dogs to be certified as a Social Therapy Visitation Dog!
